On the site of the ruins of Turkish barracks in 1815 the construction of Preobrazhensky Cathedral began us a symbol of liberation of the region from the Turkish yoke. The main dome of the cathedral had a form of a Russian helmet.

The plan of the cathedral was prepared by Ioaniky, the member of Kishinyov clergy. On September 29, 1827 Dmitri opened the cathedral but the building work continued. Until 1934 the cathedral wasn't painted. A Moldavian sculptor and painter Plamedyale performed internal wall paintings.

Several kilometres away from Bendery the unique monument of architecture and history - the complex of New-Nvametsky monastery in the village of Kitskany - is situated. Moldavian Ruler Alexander Dobrv's deed dated August 31, 1429 is the first document testifying estates of Nyametskaya Lavra situated in Transproute region.

Nyametskaya Lavra itself is the same age as the Moldavian state. It was founded 8 years later after acknowledgement of independence of Moldova in 1367. For centuries Moldavian rulers gave new estates to the monastery. In 1500 Stefan the Great gave the monastery the present Kitskany lands.
After the capture of Moldavia by Osman Porta Kitskany had remained the estate of Nyametskaya Lavra for a long time. In the result of downfall of the Osman yoke in 1859 Moldova and Valakhia united. Ruler Alexander Kuza who had come to power began to pursue cruel repressions against cloisters. Monks left Nyametskaya Lavra for Bessarabia. The question about the construction of a male monastery in Kitskany was agreed with Imperor Alexander II.

On December 24, 1862 the first thankful prayer took place in a small church of St.Nikolai. The construction of a monastery began in 1864 with building cells for monks. The name of the monastery was taken from Nyametskaya Lavra and it was named New-Nyametsky. Till now Svyato-Nikolaevskaya church built in 1832 by means of the villager of Kitskany A.Glodia and then bequeathed to the monastery is preserved.
In 1878 the construction of a cathedral in memory of erecting the Honest and Invigorating God Cross was finished (Voznesensky Cathedral), and on August 4, 1903 a new church was built (Uspenskaya church).Modern paintings of Uspenskaya church were made by E.Shikov, a painter from Bendery. The highest building in the monastery is a belfry, 64 m. high, built in 1914. The monastery was acting till 1962, then it was closed by the authorities and in 1990 it was given back to church again.

Economic development of the town was encouraged by construction of the railway Tiraspol- Kishinyov with a bridge across the Dniester in 1871. 1500 workers, 400 of them in the region of Bendery, worked there. The labour conditions were extremely difficult and that's why despaired workers of Bendery section organized, at first, the economic and then political strike. In connection with it Novorossiisk and Bessarabian General- Governor wrote in his report to the public prosecutor of Odessa court of law: "The worker's strike in Bendery is an absolutely new phenomenon never occured in the depth of our working movement".
In 1877 the railway Bendery-Galatz was built. The writer N.G.Garin-Michailovskii worked there as an engineer.

The peculiarity of the bridge across the Dniester is two tiers on the upper of which trains went and on the lower one pedestrians and cartage went. With the purpose of security the lower tier was closed with wooden lattices. The bridge was exploded on the eve of Bendery armed revolt in April, 1918. After the establishment of diplomatic relations between the USSR and Romania a new bridge was built in 1939. But in 1941 it was exploded by retr eating Soviet troops. After the war the bridge was recon¬structed again and in 1949 a railway bridge was built which is used till now. The picture of the beginning of the century.

The beginning of the 20th century was marked by the burst of revolutionary fight in the region. The revolutionary of 1905 and 1917 had a great impact on the town's history. In March, 1917 the first Moldavian Soviet of Workers and Soldiers' deputies was formed under the influence of these revolutions.

At the end of 1917 - at the beginning of 1918 Royal Romania began its military intervention. The heroic defence of Bendery lasted two weeks, but in spite of persistent resistance the town was occupied on February 7, 1918. For 22 years Bessarabia has been part of Romania. The armed revolt in Bendery in May, 1919 was the glorious page of the struggle against the military regime.

Not all buildings once decorated the town have endured the events of the 20th century. In one of such houses in the central part of the town the world-known scientist, Academician L.S.Berg was born in 1876. He was the President of the geographical society of the USSR; he is the author of 800 fundamental works on biology, history and geography.
Not far from L.S.Berg's house in Sovetskaya street there is a beautiful private residence in which now the Museum of Local Lore and history is situated. It was built by a merchant Fishtenberg. The date "1890" on the beautifully interlaced gate testifies eloquently the ending of the construction.
