A man always strives after light. The whole history of human civilization witnesses the aspiration of our ancestors to make their dwellings heated and cozy, using all known ways and natural resources for it. Nowadays heat and light for home needs and industry are produced by power stations functioning at various kinds of fuel. It is necessary to mention that the united power system was being created and developed on the territory of the USSR during 80 years. Recourses used for growth of power engineering money, time, human labour and creativity are almost impossible to be counted in rubles or dollars. The way from little thermal power stations running on coal and fuel oil, from dams of Dnepr hydropower stations to ferro-concrete huge plants using power of Siberian rivers and to nuclear power stations is tne essential way of the whole USSR and then C.I.S.
Moldavian HPS is one of the greatest power stations of this kind in Europe. The representatives of 32 nationalities of the USSR constructed it, and the suppliers of equipment and materials for the station were more than 500 enterprises of the united republics.
The first its power block (200 MW) output industrial current on September 26, 1964, i.e. 2 years after laying the foundation of the main building by the specialists of "South Power Constructing*. Almost every year new power blocks were put into operation. In August 1974, after the 10th power block putting into operation, the power of the station reached 2020 MW. In 1980 and 1982 there were additionally commissioned two steam-and-gas power blocks (250 MW each), ana the total power of Moldavian HPS reached 2520 MW. However, builders, operation and repair workers, serving staff will always remember September 26, 1964 the "birthday" of Moldavian power giant.
On the day of the 40th Anniversary of the station every power engineer and every builder recollects All-Union Komsomol construction, youth fervour, energy and initiative provided accelerated tempo of construction. Many former young enthusiasts are still working at the station, occupying high positions at different sections and defining the possibilities to save the enterprise in difficult economical conditions and the perspective of its development in current century.
The first chiefs and specialists of the HPS were the following: M.I. Mudrenko, B.P. Karpov, G.P. Kior, I.P. Chumachenko, O.M. Nartysh, A.V. Belkin, I.T. Nochka, N.P. Burlakov, E.L. Barabanov, V.I. Pribytko, I.S. Putintsev, M.V. Safronova, Y.P Kravchenko, E.D. Lebedev, T.I. Smokov, P.M. Vasilyev,I.P. Kuzmin and many others. Their selflessness and experience, labour traditions of the 60s are carefully kept and developed by young power engineers. Children and even grandchildren replaced fathers, there appeared dynasties of professional power engineers working and creating special atmosphere in the group. They managed to output 15.6 billion kWth of power, to preserve equipment and station during the 90s, to search and to find ways of selling power nowadays.
Although currently our power station has some difficulties, we are very optimistic and hopeful concerning to future of the station. Our hopes are based on assumption, understanding the peculiarities of present situation, and belief that improving tends will prevail everywhere.
I wish all the power engineers of Moldavian HPS to be able to overcome difficulties, to believe in future and to perform their professional duties in the best way.
I wish all the power engineers happiness, health, success and welfare!
Let the first power block, having produced heat and power for our republic and neighboring countries, become the talisman of our power engineering future.
Y.I. Les,
the Chairman of the Board and the Director Ceneral Moldavian HPS.

In March 1959 there begun search works for preparing power station construction on the bank of Kuchurgan estuary. They were led by a complex expedition of Lvov Branch of "Power Project" institute under the leadership of an experienced specialist I. Leshchenko.
In 1960 this institute developed the project of Kuchurgan HPS and the village. The Chief Engineer of the project was R. Lukavsky, and construction of these buildings began in 1961.
The construction of Kuchurgan HPS became especially significant state object. The Government sent experienced specialists here. From the very beginning the construction was headed by I.A. Shutikov, a skilled hydro builder. He had participated in constructions of a number of state hydro power stations. I.A. Shutikov came to Kuchurgan HPS after finishing the construction of Dubossary HPS, either did the main part of builders.
Supplies of timber, cement, slate, metal, machines and equipment were delivered as a continuous current here.
By the middle of 1962 the building base had been created, there was built temporal accommodation, a school, two shops, and a first aid post. The builders got power and water to continue works without any interruptions. During a year 360 families of the builders received accommodation, and more than 400 workers were settled in hostels.

April 24, 1962 became a memorable day for G. Palamarchuk, an excavator worker, as with the help of his high-powered machine he lifted the first bucket of soil from the future ditch of the main building foundation. It was the moment that the construction of the power station began. Two months after on June 24 the Supreme Council Chairman of Moldavian SSR, Y.S. Koditsa, put the memorable plate into the concrete of the main building foundation. That plate reads: "The main building of Kuchurgan HPS was iaid on June 24, 1962."

On October 16, 1962, there was concreted the basis of the first turbo-alternator and there were laid 600 cubic meters of concrete on the industrial area controlled by the engineer G. Aksyonov during 60 working hours. The work was finished 7 hours earlier than the time fixed. It was hours saved for preschedule putting the first power block into operation.

In the same month the assembling brigade headed by Dmitry Pronenko assembled the second in the USSR high- powered lifting crane БК-1000 with carrying capacity 50 tones.

On January 4, 1963, the settlement near the village Nezavertailovka got the status of a settlement of an urban type. There appeared one more little star named Dniestrovsk on the map of our country. Beginning with that moment our power- town began got its present name and functioning independently.
On August 15, 1963, a huge red flag was raised on the 180-meter chimney: the builders of the area "Special Reinforced Concrete Construction" proclaimed their labour victory. Having laid more than two 2.000 cubic meters of concrete, they finished constructing the 180-meter chimney 100 days before the fixed time. The head of that area was clerk of the works Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. It is an incredible coincidence!

On September 1, 1963, the school children of the town received a new two-storey school as a present from the builders. On the same day there was a festive meeting. The clerk of living area works, Y. Moskavets, received many flowers and greetings. This wonderful person was heading the construction from the very moment of laying the foundation till handing over the keys to the Director of the school, F.T. Burkov. Real persons of their words and deeds worked then at Kuchurgan HPS.
