Regular Past simple forms ends in -ed in positive form.But many verbs have an irregular past form(sleep-slept,go-went)
Positive form Negative form
I/ you/ he/ she/ it/ we/ they started I/ you/ he/she/it/we/ they didn't
start

we use Past simple to talk about a finished action or state in the past.It can be something that happened once or many times.We often say when it happened.
Examples:
He died in 1980.(once)
My mother always took me to school when i was young(many times)
I lived in a very small house those days.(state)

the past simple of verb be is was/were

positive form negative form
I/ it/ he/ she was late I/he/ she/ it wasn't late
we/ you/ they were late we/ you/ they weren't late
question form
Was I/he/ she /it ?
Were we/ you/ they?
