Let's help each other to improve own English in practice. Ask your questions... And let's give answers, helps, recommendations...

Please check my translation. It's really difficult to find Eglish translation for some phrases. Thank in advance for you help.
"Trinity is the God whose essence is single but His being is personality relationship of three persons of the Holy Trinity: The Father — of the First Origin without initial (безначального Первоначала), The Son — of the absolute Meaning (абсолютного Смысла)in Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost — of the Life-giving Origin (животворящего Начала)."

You'd better provide the whole passage. Reading relevant books in Rissian might be helpful too. Some of them contain the terms you need as they are not common usage but faith-specific.

OK, Here is this passage : " Троица — Бог, сущность которого едина, но Его бытие есть личностное отношение трех ипостасей: Отца — безначального Первоначала, Сына — абсолютного Смысла, воплотившегося в Иисусе Христе, и Духа Святого — животворящего Начала. "

It may go like this: The Trinity is God whose substance is uniform, but whose existence is the intimate relationship of the three hypostases: Father – the Eternal Source, Son - the Absolute Essence embodied in Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit - the Life-Giving Source.
You can look up for terms in search machines by simply typing them in. There's plenty of information. But be careful with your choice, as diffferent churches use different terms. They accept ones and shun others. So, to correctly translate this kind of texts the enterpretor has to realize who he/she is translating for, hold a good grasp of terminology in both languages and generally be good at them (in this case - both Russian and English). I hope this *helps (at least a bit).

Sorry, my love, but advice is uncountable. I wish you good luck and hope for further communication. At your service.

Thanks again. I'm ashamed for this mistake. I know it but...

There is nothing to be ashamed of. Even educated native speakers are careless about their language usage. Read John Kennedy's letters, for example. And he graduated from the best US universities. Some people keep on developing their
English and thankfully accept any correction. Others are quite satisfed with the little they have and frown at any effort to help them grow further.

Speaking about growing further. For no particular reason the sentence "They accept ones and shun others" doesn't sound right to me. "They accept SOME and shun others" seems a bit better. Just an observation...
As for the topic of the discussion, no Biblical quotation sounds good in English if it doesn't have all those "thou shalt not" antiquities, the same way as the Church Slavonic sounds appropriate for Russian Orthodox terminology. Which makes the task of translating religious texts very hard indeed.

Zgnp Loy

"ты узнаешь себя" было бы что-то вроде "you will discover yourself" (возможны и более умные варианты). Но точно не "find out". Oборот "to find out" означает "узнать, выяснить" в смысле какого-то факта, события и т.п.

Это пройдёт, hopefully. Вы бы знали, в какой ступор меня повергают мои ошибки в китайском! У них половина слов звучат одинаково, но они умеют их различать, а я пока не очень. :'(

help me when I would say <and what is your name> can I say <but your name?>

Zgnp Loy
04-16-2011, 02:29 AM
I don't think that "but your name?" is an appropriate substitute for "what is your name?" Sometimes "but" can be used as a separator, like "everyone but me" ("все кроме меня"), so "but your name?" can mean "кроме твоего имени".
If you don't want to respond to a question "What is your name" with an identical phrase "And what is your name", you can just say "And what is yours?" or even shorter "And yours?"That would sound more natural. I guess.
